Jon R. Stark
With broad experience in litigation, counseling, and patent prosecution, Jon provides strategic intellectual property advice to established and early-stage companies. His practice includes appellate litigation, pre-litigation patent investigations and related opinion work, patent portfolio analysis, intellectual property licensing, and patent litigation strategy and support.
Jon was formerly the Managing Partner (California) for Pennie & Edmonds LLP, where he conducted trials and appeals of patent and copyright cases across the nation for a wide range of international computer, semiconductor, telecommunications, and related technology industry clients. Before his private practice, Jon served as Regional Patent Counsel for Hewlett-Packard Company. His technical experience includes research for thermonuclear fusion energy reactors at Los Alamos and Sandia National Laboratories.

- Jon has served as an expert witness on patent issues in both federal and state court including the recent high profile case, Rambus, Inc. v. Hynix Semiconductor, Inc. et al. Case C 05-00334 RMW and C 05-02298 (N.D. CA).
- In June 2007, Jon argued a case regarding patent malpractice before the Federal Circuit, Immunocept v. Fulbright & Jaworski. Before joining Chao Hadidi Stark and Barker, Jon had served as lead counsel in a number of trials and argued before the Federal Circuit. He also was principal author of several winning briefs submitted before both the Federal Circuit and Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
- Jon has advised clients regarding the scope and validity of patents including preparation of formal opinions in computer hardware and software, telecommunications, semiconductor circuits, semiconductor processing, robotics, cryptography, user interfaces, computer peripherals, local and wide area networks, printers, test equipment, design tools and instruments, computer graphics, and medical device fields.
Jon holds a Doctor of Jurisprudence and an A.M. from Stanford. He did graduate work in Astrophysics at the University of Illinois, and earned his B.S. in Mathematics and Physics and M.A. in Mathematics at the University of New Mexico.
Bar MembershipsJon is admitted to practice in California, New York, Colorado, and the District of Columbia, the U.S. Supreme Court, the Federal and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeals, and several U.S. District Courts throughout the country. He has been registered to practice before the U.S. Patent Trademark Office since 1980.
